Father’s Day – why do we celebrate Father’s Day

Father’s Day in 2022 will be celebrated on Sunday 19th June. The celebration of Father’s Day started in the early 20th century in the UK did not originate in the UK, but in the USA. It originated in Washington, USA in 1910. Now it is celebrated in in the USA, UK and many other countries worldwide. 

Father’s day didn’t originally take off as it was thought that it was just another day to add to the calendar but eventually it started to take off and become commercialised.  The same idea of Father’s Day as Mother’s  day  – we are showing how we appreciate our dad’s.

Generally, Father’s Day is celebrated on  the 3rd Sunday of June in the UK, USA and Canada. In Russia it is celebrated on 23rd February and is called “Defender of the Fatherland Day”. In Thailand it is celebrated  on King Bhumibo’s birthday, on the 5th of December he is as the father of Thailand.

Ideas for gifts for dad

Make something – your dad will probably treasure this more than a shop brought item.  As well as a handmade card you could make a photo frame with one of your favourite photos together. Why not make something personal for him make a handmade bookmark. with our free tutorial or a make a felted camper with LED lights just for dad. Other ideas could be going out with dad for a family walk, IOU for washing his car or golf clubs !!
